  • the overall integrity and fairness of the age category is maintained.

This allowance does not apply to Solos, Duos, or Trios.

All age allowances are subject to approval at the sole discretion of the Competition Director and may be refused if deemed inappropriate for the section entered.

Evolution reserves the right to request proof of age at any time, including but not limited to a birth certificate or official identification. Failure to provide proof of age upon request may result in disqualification.

6. novice & open eligibility

Evolution Dance Competition offers both Novice and Open sections at Regional events.

Novice sections are intended for performers who meet specific eligibility requirements and rely on honesty and integrity from entrants, parents, and studios.

It is the responsibility of the entrant, parent/guardian, or studio to ensure performers are entered into the correct section.

6.1 Novice Eligibility

A performer is eligible to enter Novice sections provided that all of the following conditions are met:

  • The performer has not previously won 1st Place in a Novice or equivalent unclassified section with five (5) or more competitors, at Evolution or any other dance competition, within two (2) weeks prior to the Evolution event; and

  • The performer has not previously competed in an Intermediate or Open section at Evolution or any other competition; and

  • The performer is not clearly beyond a novice level of experience, training, or competitive history.

6.2 Transition from Novice to Open

  • A 1st Place win in a Novice section will only be recorded for eligibility purposes when the section contains five (5) or more competitors.

  • Once a performer has received a qualifying 1st Place win, they are required to move to Open sections for future events in accordance with the rules below.

If a performer competes at two (2) or more Evolution Regional events within the same season and receives a qualifying 1st Place win at their first event, they must move to Open sections for any subsequent Evolution events within that season, including National Finals.

A qualifying Novice win carries forward across age categories and does not reset when a performer moves into a higher age group.

6.3 Season-Specific Conditions

For clarity:

  • Any performer who received a qualifying 1st Place Novice win during the 2025 season (including National Finals 2026 as the conclusion of the 2025 season) is required to compete in Open sections for the 2026 season, regardless of subsequent rule amendments.

  • Amendments to Novice eligibility rules apply prospectively only and do not override eligibility changes already triggered in previous seasons.

6.4 Entry Restrictions

Performers may enter either Novice or Open sections, not both.

A performer entered into a Novice section may not enter any Open sections at the same event, and vice versa, regardless of style or age category.

6.5 EVO Apprentice (Novice Championship)

The Top 10 highest-scoring Novice soloists in each age category across all Evolution Regional events will be recognised as EVO Apprentice nominees.

Eligible nominees may enter the EVO Apprentice Championship at National Finals, subject to meeting all published National Finals entry requirements, deadlines, and conditions.

6.6 Incorrect Entry & Enforcement

Evolution reserves the right to:

  • Investigate Novice eligibility at any time

  • Request supporting evidence where eligibility is questioned

  • Move a performer to Open sections or disqualify an entry where eligibility requirements are not met

Reports of incorrect Novice entry may be submitted confidentially. However, Evolution will not act on eligibility concerns without supporting evidence.

Any performer found to have entered Novice sections incorrectly may be disqualified without refund.

8. ENTRIES, PAYMENTS & COMPETITOR PASSES

All entries must be submitted via Evolution Dance Competition’s online registration system.

Entries are only considered accepted once:

  • the entry has been submitted in full, and

  • the required payment (full or part payment, where applicable) has been received.

Evolution reserves the right to remove unpaid or incomplete entries at any time.

Entries close once an event reaches capacity. Evolution does not guarantee availability of sections once an event is nearing capacity.

  • Solos

  • Duos / Trios

  • Studio Group sections

The Studio Competitor Pass covers all performances entered by the performer at that event.

The School Competitor Pass applies only to performers entering School Group sections exclusively.

If a performer is entered in both School Group sections and Studio sections at the same event, the Studio Competitor Pass applies.

8.4 What the Competitor Pass Includes

The Competitor Pass provides performers with access to essential event services, including but not limited to:

  • participation in all entered sections for the event

  • access to the digital event program

  • professional audio and/or video critiques

  • backstage, technical, and event management support

  • access to a fully staffed and professionally run competition environment

The Competitor Pass does not include media purchases, merchandise, or accommodation.

8.5 new to 2026! artistry award - optional add-on entry

The Artistry Award is an optional add-on entry available to eligible routines at Evolution events.

Entry into the Artistry Award is voluntary and requires the payment of an additional fee per routine ($15), as published at the time of entry.

By entering the Artistry Award, entrants acknowledge and agree that:

  • The additional fee provides eligibility for consideration only, not a guaranteed award or placing

  • The Artistry Award is judged separately from standard section placings

  • The award is assessed based on artistic interpretation, performance quality, musicality, emotional connection and overall artistic impact, at the adjudicators’ discretion

  • Not all Artistry Award entrants will receive an award

Evolution reserves the right to:

  • Determine the number of Artistry Awards presented at each event

  • Withhold the presentation of an Artistry Award if, in the adjudicators’ opinion, the standard has not been met

  • Allocate prize values or benefits associated with the Artistry Award at its discretion, subject to change

Artistry Award entry fees are non-refundable, including in cases of withdrawal, illness, injury or change of mind.

8.6 Part Payments, layby & aFTERPAY

Evolution Dance Competition offers the following payment options for eligible events:

  • Full Payment

  • Layby / Part Payment (deposit with balance payable over time)

  • Afterpay

Layby / Part Payment Conditions

Where a layby (part payment) option is selected:

  • A minimum non-refundable deposit must be paid at the time of entry for the entry to be secured

  • The entrant is responsible for managing their own payment schedule

  • Full payment must be completed no later than approximately six (6) weeks prior to the event, or by the published payment deadline

  • Failure to make payments may result in the entry being removed

If full payment is not received by the required date:

  • the entry may not be scheduled, and

  • any monies paid may be forfeited

Afterpay

Where Afterpay is selected as a payment method:

  • all Afterpay fees and surcharges are payable by the customer

  • Evolution does not absorb Afterpay fees

General Payment Conditions

Failure to make the required minimum payment at the time of entry may result in the entry being removed.

No refunds are provided for change of mind, failure to complete payment, or failure to attend.

Payments may attract a processing surcharge (including card and/or platform fees). Where Afterpay is selected, all Afterpay fees and surcharges are payable by the customer.

8.7 Withdrawals, Refunds & Forfeiture

Entry fees and Competitor Pass fees are non-refundable in the event of:

  • change of mind

  • scheduling conflicts

  • illness

  • failure to attend

In the event of a withdrawal due to injury, Evolution may, at its discretion, consider a partial refund subject to:

  • written notification within the published timeframe, and

  • provision of appropriate supporting documentation.

Refund decisions are made at the sole discretion of the Competition Director.

No refunds, credits, or transfers are offered for:

  • missed performances

  • late withdrawals

  • disqualification

  • National Finals entries (refer to Section 13).

8.8 Responsibility of the Entrant

  • eligibility requirements are met

  • payments are made by required deadlines

Evolution accepts no responsibility for errors made during the entry process.

7. Performance limits & entry restrictions

7.1 Solo Entry Limits – Regional Events

A performer may enter a maximum of five (5) solo routines per Regional event.

This limit applies:

  • per performer

  • per Regional event

  • across all solo categories combined

Entries exceeding this limit will not be accepted or may be removed at the discretion of the Competition Director.

7.2 category definitions

Category descriptions and style guidelines are provided in the Competitor Handbook as a general guide to assist entrants in selecting the most appropriate category.

Evolution Dance Competition recognises that choreography may incorporate elements from multiple styles. The adjudicators’ interpretation of style, category suitability, and execution will be final.

Evolution reserves the right to reclassify, move, or adjudicate an entry at its discretion if a routine is deemed to be entered in an inappropriate category.

7.3 no repeat routines

A routine may not be performed more than once at the same event, unless expressly requested or approved by the Competition Director.

7.4 Solo Entry Limits – National Finals

Solo entry limits for National Finals are outlined separately under National Finals Conditions and may differ from Regional limits.

7.5 Duo & Trio Entry Limits

Duo and Trio performers may perform once per section, unless performing with a different partner or grouping.

Evolution reserves the right to limit Duo or Trio entries if required for scheduling or capacity purposes.

7.6 Group Entry Limits

There is no overall limit to the total number of group routines a studio or school may enter at a Regional event, subject to event capacity.

However, groups may perform a maximum of four (4) routines per genre / section per Regional event.  (e.g. a studio may enter up to four Open Jazz Groups, four Lyrical Groups, etc.).

Evolution Dance Competition reserves the right to:

  • limit entries in any section once capacity is reached

  • combine or divide sections

  • restrict additional entries where required for scheduling, safety, or operational reasons

All group entry limits are enforced at the discretion of the Competition Director.

7.7 Open Age Groups – Full Time & Non Full Time Classification

This provision applies to Open Age Groups only.

Studios that offer Full Time training programs and enter Open Age Group sections in the following genres:

  • Jazz

  • Lyrical

  • Contemporary

  • Any Style

will be required to nominate whether the group is FULL TIME or NON FULL TIME at the time of registration.

Where applicable:

  • Full Time and Non Full Time groups will compete within the same section
(e.g. Open Age Jazz Large Group)

  • Groups will be judged together, however

  • Placings and awards will be determined and presented separately for Full Time and Non Full Time groups

During registration, studios will be required to select FULL TIME or NON FULL TIME via a dropdown field for the relevant sections.

Evolution Dance Competition reserves the right to amend, continue, or discontinue this classification in future seasons.

9. scheduling, programs & event changes

9.1 Event Scheduling

Evolution Dance Competition reserves the right to schedule events in a manner it deems most appropriate, including but not limited to scheduling by age group, genre, section, or a combination of these.

Events may run up to one (1) hour ahead of schedule. All performers are required to check in with the front desk at least one (1) hour prior to their scheduled section time, unless otherwise advised.

It is the responsibility of the entrant, parent/guardian, or studio to be present and ready to perform when called.

9.2 Age Schedules

An Age Schedule provides a general indication of which age groups are scheduled to perform on each day of an event.

Age Schedules are released once an event reaches sufficient capacity and are provided as a guide only. They do not constitute a detailed timetable and are subject to change.

9.3 Draft & Final Programs

A draft program is usually released approximately three (3) weeks prior to the event. Entrants are responsible for reviewing the draft program and notifying Evolution of any errors within the published review period.

A final program will be released following the draft review period. Once the final program has been issued:

  • no further changes will be made, and

  • requests for scheduling adjustments will not be accepted.

Evolution accepts no responsibility for errors not identified during the draft review period.

9.4 SECTION SPLITS

Where a section has twenty (20) or more entries, Evolution reserves the right to split the section into two or more sections for scheduling and operational purposes.

9.5 School day programming intention

Where an event is scheduled during school term time, Evolution will endeavour to program in a way that minimises disruption (including scheduling primary-aged performers earlier and high school performers later where possible). This is not guaranteed and remains subject to venue and scheduling constraints.

9.6 National Finals Scheduling

National Finals are primarily genre-blocked rather than age-blocked.

As a result:

  • performers may be scheduled to perform across multiple days, and

  • Solos, Duos/Trios, Groups, and Championship sections may occur on different days.

Entrants acknowledge and accept that National Finals requires flexibility in scheduling, and Evolution strongly recommends waiting for the final program before making travel arrangements.

9.7 Program Amendments & Event Changes

Evolution reserves the right to:

  • amend event schedules

  • combine or divide sections

  • move sections between days

  • adjust running orders

  • change venues or event dates due to unforeseen circumstances

Such changes may occur before or during an event and do not constitute grounds for a refund.

9.8 Failure to Attend or Perform

All decisions relating to behavioural breaches are made at the sole discretion of the Competition Director.
